Education Monitoring

The core mission of the Science Student Union is educational monitoring. As an official student union, we are responsible for continuously gathering and evaluating student opinions on education at the Faculty of Science and representing those views in all relevant faculty decision-making bodies.

Educational monitoring is carried out by our Student Councils and coordinated through the Education Committee (UU), where student representatives from both faculty and department levels come together to align on common goals and strategies. This ensures that neither the Faculty of Science nor its departments can implement changes to your education without first consulting the Science Student Union.

Our work also includes upholding student rights, as outlined in the official Student List of Rights, available in English and in Swedish.

Influence

In addition to educational monitoring, the Science Student Union is actively involved in many other areas of student life and faculty operations. Similar to our work in education, we support structured student influence in areas such as gender and equality, as well as health, environment, and safety.

In these areas, Student Councils elect representatives at the departmental level. These representatives are coordinated through the Gender and Equality Committee (JoL) and the Health, Environment, and Safety Committee (HMS), where students at both faculty and department levels come together to align on shared goals and strategies.

Beyond these committees, the Science Student Union contributes to a wide range of decision-making processes across the Faculty of Science.

Student Representatives

To ensure effective educational monitoring and strong student influence, the union's committees and student councils rely on the support of dedicated student representatives. Each year, the Science Student Union appoints over 100 student representatives—motivated students who are committed to improving education and student life at the Faculty of Science.

These representatives are supported through committee collaboration and guided by the union's official opinion documents, which outline our positions on undergraduate education and broader student issues. Together, we work to continuously enhance the quality of education and the overall student experience at the Faculty of Science.

Course Representatives

Course representatives are student representatives elected for each course at the Faculty of Science. According to §3.12 of the Student List of Rights, every course must provide students with the opportunity to elect a course representative during scheduled class time. Each course determines the method of election.

The course representative serves as a liaison between the students and the course instructor. If a student feels uncomfortable addressing course-related concerns directly with the teacher or department, the course representative is there to speak on their behalf. Additionally, course representatives assist the course coordinator in compiling the course evaluation at the end of the course and report feedback to the Science Student Union, either directly or through their Student Council.

Course representatives play a vital role in the union's educational monitoring efforts. If your course does not offer the opportunity to elect a course representative, please contact us at luna@luna.lu.se.

Honorary and Pedagogical Prizes

The purpose of the Honorary and Pedagogical Prizes awarded by LUNA is to celebrate and recognize the people who make a real difference in students' academic lives, not just by fulfilling their roles, but by going beyond expectations in supporting students and improving the educational experience.

The Honorary Prize is about shining a light on those behind-the-scenes heroes - staff members or groups who may not always be in the spotlight but have worked meaningfully to ease the burden on students or to strengthen their voices within the university. These are the people who advocate for students, remove obstacles, or create systems and environments that make student life more manageable and empowering.

The Pedagogical Prize is the union’s highest teaching recognition - reserved for truly exceptional educators. It’s given to a teacher who doesn’t just deliver content but inspires curiosity, respects student individuality, and actively listens to feedback. The winner is someone who becomes a real partner in learning: supportive, enthusiastic, and approachable.

In 2025, the Honorary Prize was awarded to Lotta Persmark and the Pedagogical Prize was awarded to Ross Church. A full list of previous recipients of both prizes can be found here along the prize justification.
